Monster Magnet - God Says No (2LP)

Following the success of 1998's Powertrip, expectations were high. Rather than repeat themselves, the band shifted direction and time spent with this album suggests that their "inspiration" had evolved. The result is a heavier but more sprawling and less focused album. It may not have fully landed at the time, but this more acid-drenched version of the band is arguably more interesting than their straight-ahead rock mode. There are clear nods to 70s rock heavyweights like Ted Nugent and Kiss, alongside hints of Guns N' Roses. But frontman Dave Wyndorf seems to have thrown all these influences into a van and driven into the desert with Hunter S. Thompson. It's the only explanation for the wired stomp of 'Leapin' Lizards'. Unfocused it may be, but there are inspired moments throughout. 'Heads Explode' hits hard, 'My Little Friend' locks into a relentless groove, and there's even a leftfield detour into bossa nova with 'Take It'. God might just say yes to this one.
